NORTH and Sylvans last night put on a Corbet Cup final worthy of its guest of honour Sir Trevor Brooking.
And it was North to whom he was handing the cup and the winners medals after they won a thrilling match in front of more than 400 spectators at the Corbet Field.
‘Congratulations to both sides – it was an excellent game with great passing,’ said Brooking afterwards. ‘It’s also so nice to see so many parents here. Keep up the good work in Guernsey.’
The match was nine players versus nine on a three-quarter sized pitch with rolling substitutes, exactly the type of game that Brooking as the FA director of football is trying to promote nationally for juniors.
The action was end to end for the whole 60 minutes. After starting the stronger of the two, North found themselves 1-0 down after 13 minutes when Sylvans striker Kyle Smith did well to hold onto the ball in the box before getting his shot off.
The chocolate-and-blues equalised through Callum Chapman Page shortly afterwards and the score remained level at half-time.
Chapman Page then put his side ahead midway through the second half and his teammates Harry Duquemin and Tom Martin, who was named man-of-the-match, made it 4-1 with 10 minutes left.
Adam Smith then clawed one back for Sylvans with a diving header.
But North’s attacker Harry Smith got past a couple of tackles to make it 5-2.
The reds got a late consolation goal in the dying moments with the best play of the match as Jake Gallienne got on the end of a well-worked passing move.
‘It was a tough game, fair play to Sylvans,’ said North’s coach Mark Totty.
‘I thought they were the better side, especially in the first half. We didn’t play as well as we can but we’ve been the best side all year and we showed it tonight.
‘Special mention to Jason Piriou. They are a well coached side.’
Sylvans coach Piriou was naturally disappointed. ‘We played really well and we seemed to dominate for long periods of the match,’ he said.
‘Unfortunately we didn’t put away all of our chances. But I’m very pleased with the way the boys played. They are a credit to the club and to themselves.
‘It was very nice to have Sir Trevor Brooking here. It sure gave the boys an extra boost to play in front of such an important guy.’
