LES Beaucamps Secondary School should be a top priority for States capital projects now that there is money to rebuild, according to the chief minister.
The States announced yesterday that it had a surplus of £70m. – nearly double what had been estimated when it decided to scrap corporation tax from January and introduce zero-10 tax reform.
Deputy Mike Torode said he would like to see the new States move forward with plans for the secondary school, which opened in 1959. ‘We have had a financially good year and I am optimistic that the new States will be able to get moving with capital projects. I hope that they will start with Les Beaucamps fairly quickly.’
Les Beaucamps head teacher Peter Le Cheminant was grateful for Deputy Torode’s support.
‘Obviously it is down to the new House to decide priorities, but I am pleased the current chief minister is giving it such wholehearted support and can see that it needs to be a priority project,’ he said.
‘I hope the new States members will share his views.’
Education minister Martin Ozanne said the preferred site plan was with the Environment Department, which would need to go out to public consultation before a tender is sought – if the States agrees it is a priority.
The States is set to debate prioritisation of spending in September.
* The States decided in 2002 to keep the 11-plus, build a sixth form centre at the Grammar School and to replace out-of-date secondary schools so that each youngster had the same facilities. Les Beaucamps is the oldest of the secondary schools and La Mare de Carteret is the youngest.
