No more Sunday mailings

0461537.jpgGUERNSEY’S post watchdog hopes the ending of Sunday mail shipments from the Bailiwick will be the last reduction in service.

The service will stop from 18 May following Royal Mail’s decision to cut its Sunday UK mail network as part of a rationalisation plan. Guernsey Postwatch chairman Mike Garrett said the move was a fait accompli that he hoped would be the last.

‘Apparently there will no collection in Guernsey on a Sunday,’ he said. ‘I hope it’s not the thin end of the wedge and that this will be the start of more cuts in future.’

Mr Garrett met yesterday to discuss the matter with Guernsey Post Ltd.

‘They gave me a guarantee that there will be no further cuts in the near future,’ he said.

‘We as Postwatch will be watching the situation very closely.’

The watchdog group would continue to work with Guernsey Post, he said, because it was a successful partnership.

‘They have a job to do and we don’t want to be obstructive.’

Office of Utility Regulation director general John Curran said any reduction in the availability of this service was regrettable.

‘Currently, with Royal Mail as the only viable option for handling Guernsey’s mail into the UK, there is very little Guernsey Post can do at this time,’ he said.

‘As competition in the UK postal market develops there may be alternatives to Royal Mail that Guernsey Post might consider but that won’t help address this particular issue.

‘At this stage, it is too early to say what impact the change may have on quality of service but it is something we will monitor.

‘We are aware that Guernsey Post will be talking to customers on this change and we would expect them to monitor how the change impacts on key customers.’
