Vandals hit Town shops

TWO shops in the High Street were vandalised within 24 hours of each other this week. Mappin & Webb jewellers had its awning badly damaged after the canopy was pulled from its brackets.

And clothes shop Nautilus, situated a few doors further down the High Street, had its front window smashed by vandals for the third time in four months. Mappin & Webb manager Robert Read said the damage would cost about £1,000 to repair.

‘We can’t work out if it was a lorry or individual,’ he said. ‘But it’s a real pain. Not only was it criminally damaged, but it was left in a dangerous position, just hanging down where someone could have walked into it and seriously hurt themselves.’

Nautilus manager Gwen Wallace said acts of vandalism were becoming more common.

‘For years we have had no problems at all, but this year we have already had smashed windows on three occasions,’ she said.

‘The last two incidents were more serious and we had to board the windows up. I think it is just people messing around in the street, not anybody with a grudge targeting the shop.‘It happens when boys go out drinking and are messing about.’

The damage at Nautilus happened some time between 5.30pm on Tuesday and 12.25am on Wednesday.

Mappin & Webb’s awning was damaged between 5.50pm on Wednesday and 6.30am the following day.

Police are appealing for witnesses and ask anyone who has any information about either of these incidents to contact them on 725111.
