‘Prove you are business-friendly’

0462897.jpgTHE new States has been told it must show its support for business. With 19 new members, a degree of uncertainty surrounds their intentions over the economy and zero-10.

Guernsey International Business Association deputy chairman Paul Meader (pictured) said it wanted to see the House demonstrate its backing of business to show that it realised that every aspect of the island benefited from a strong and successful economy.

‘That understanding should feed through into business-friendly policies.  That’s not to say that social issues are unimportant or to be overlooked. Business people are as keen as anyone to make sure that the island’s social fabric is strong and Guernsey retains its uniqueness as a place to visit and to live in.

‘We’d just underline the view that this can be best achieved by a government that is able to reap the financial benefits from a successful and vibrant economy.’

Mr Meader said it was noticeable that candidates who stood on an anti-finance ticket had not been returned.

‘That’s encouraging from Giba’s perspective. States members will be judged by all islanders, as well as Giba, by their actions, so we’ll all get a good idea of the calibre when we start seeing the sort of decisions they are making for the island.’

However, he said that Giba intends to continue explaining what the finance sector is all about.

‘We expect that to be very useful for all States members, not just the new deputies.

‘The event we staged on 2 April for candidates was very well received and the next step is likely to be focused on the members of the new House and go into greater detail about the various different industries within the finance sector.

‘What underlies this activity is our desire to help explain finance and its role within the island because no other agency has a mandate to undertake this task.’

Perhaps Mr Meader and his friends should first prove they are Guernsey friendly.
