ENGLAND lived up to their top-billing status as they took the first four places in the men’s singles event on day one of the Senior Triple Crown at the Island Bowl.
The tournament features the best over-50 players from England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Jersey and Guernsey. With the biggest pool of players to choose from, the English are expected to dominate the weekend.
And it was Gary Barlow from Barnsley who took the first gold of the weekend when he averaged 240.67 points a game. ‘I found it very good,’ said the computer analyst. The lanes suited the way I bowl. I was comfortable on the lanes early on and I managed to keep it that way.
‘That’s the best average I’ve had in a tournament.’
Barlow was followed by teammates Lol Ellis, Mick Ince with Ray Lay in fourth.
Lay is also a member of the British Deaf tenpin bowling team.
Today sees the doubles and trios competitions with the teams and masters events taking place tomorrow.
Barlow said the English hoped to maintain their form all weekend.
‘If we keep this going, the ball is in our court, but we can’t afford to get too confident,’ he said.
Out of a field of 36, the highest-placed Guernsey bowler in the men’s singles was Derek Tomlin, seventh with an average of 206.67
The next Sarnian was Greg Gettings in 16th spot. He averaged 196.33.
‘I’m very happy to come 16th because recently I’ve not been bowling very well,’ he said.
‘It didn’t go too badly today. I had only one dodgy game which put me down a few places.
‘The people that have come here have to qualify for their teams so they are the best bowlers in their country.’
Bob du Feu finished one place behind Gettings in 17th, while fellow Sarnians Paul Balshaw, Nick French and Dave Wrigley came 28th, 32nd and 35th respectively.
