Cricket’s ‘bible’ explains so much

GUERNSEY cricket has published its handbook with the start of the 2008 evening campaign season two days away.

With significant changes to the Evening League, which is again being sponsored by Barclays Wealth, being implemented, the Guernsey Cricket Association’s handbook is essential to the hundreds involved in the sport.

‘Cricket in Guernsey is moving forward and everyone involved is looking forward to what is going to be an exciting season,’ said GCA president Mark Latter. ‘The handbook is effectively the bible for anyone who plays or umpires as it gives every bit of information that captains, team members and umpires need to know.’

At the end of last year the GCA’s plans to transform the shorter Evening League games to a Twenty20 style game and to introduce a new knockout competition were ratified by the island cricket clubs.

At the same time Barclays Wealth agreed to extend its existing sponsorship of the league for another three years and to sponsor the new knockout competition.

The new structure, which the GCA said in its proposals would freshen up the sport, make games as competitive as possible and helps prepare the island side for the 20-over cricket they will play in the future, sees Divisions One and Two decided under Twenty20 rules and   Three to Five playing 20-over games with existing evening league rules.

The competition, which will be known as the Barclays Wealth Twenty20 Evening League, will be played over nine weeks at the height of summer.

Latter said that the new rules had been included in the handbook and on the website and captains had also been given information about the rule changes to pass on to their teams. The GCA has also worked with Gacus to ensure that umpires fully understand the rules.

‘We have tried to ensure that everyone has all the information they need so that there are no problems when the League starts on Monday. The only problem we can’t prepare for is the weather and we can only hope that after last year’s regular downpours, which saw the season extended by a month, that we are due some perfect cricketing conditions,’ said Latter.

To celebrate the start of the season, Barclays Wealth’s head of Guernsey, Mark Leaman, has announced some new monthly awards.

Until now the GCA has simply selected the  player of the month but this year awards will be given at the end of May, June, July and August for individual outstanding performances with bat and ball.

Guernsey Cricket Association handbooks are available from KGV or by contacting Mark Latter at info@guernseycricket.com.
