Rovers B all-rounder Robbie Le Corre bowls against Sylvans last evening at the Memorial Field as the evening cricket season began. His side went on to win comprehensively by 10 wickets, with Matt Hallett claiming a hat-trick.
JERSEY’S new South African coach, the former Test batsman, Peter Kirsten, is already playing catch- up on the inter-insular scene after two good wins for the Sarnians at Grainville over the weekend.
Although officially billed as friendlies, Guernsey coach Dave Hearse was quick to question if there could ever be such a thing.
‘I don’t think there will ever be a friendly against Jersey,’ said Hearse. ‘There was pride to play for and it was important for Jersey and their new coach.’
Once again Jersey fluffed their lines when it came to facing spin, a point recognised by Kirsten. ‘One thing that was very evident is that Jersey’s batsmen appear to lack in playing against spin bowlers and that is something I will certainly be working on with them over the next three weeks before the [World League] tournament. Our bowlers were also a bit rusty with their line and length on Saturday when I thought Guernsey’s fielding was excellent.’
Hearse said the matches had been ‘invaluable’ and a ‘good exercise’.
He was particularly happy with the fact that the younger element of the squad had produced in one way or another and says that a consequence of their selection is much sharper fielding.
‘They give us a lot more presence around the bat. They put pressure on batsmen.’
That was highlighted in arguably the turning point of the second game, with Bradley Vowden steering the Caesareans towards their target.
‘At most stages of the game Jersey should have won it. But Bradley unnecessarily took on Kris’s [Moherndl] arm and lost.’
The other juniors in the side – Ben Ferbrache, Jonny Clark and Tim Ravenscroft – also contributed.
Ravenscroft’s one knock yielded only five at number three, but with his off spin he took four for 34 and he played a big role in Guernsey defending a mediocre score in game two.
‘I was pleased with young Jonny’s left-arm swing, moving the ball into the right-handers.
‘For a debutant at just 17, he bowled very well.
‘It was also pleasing to see young Ben and Kris bring us home.
‘Blane also bowled very well up front.’
