Bienvenu makes his mark in a year

0571754.jpg The first big rod-caught turbot reported this year – Pieter Coetzer with his 18-12-5 fish which he hooked at Godine from Richard Keen’s Margaret K.

STAN BIENVENU, who had been in the club for only one year, stole the show at the Sarnia Specimen Club’s annual dinner and presentation night held at L’Eree Bay Hotel.

He won no fewer than six trophies, including the club championship, the shore championship and the best achievement award, two monthly awards and two specimen certificates from the South-West Federation of Sea Anglers.

The evening was compered by Alan Martel. He paid a special tribute to Barry Jacobs, who had once again worked tirelessly for the club during the previous year.

The hard work he had completed did not seem to affect his angling for he won two specimen cups, one monthly award, set two club records and obtained four SWFSA certificates.

It was also pleasing to see the success achieved by the club’s only junior angler, Brandon La Touche.

The club do not run a junior section so Brandon has to beat the senior members to get any awards. The fact he had a share in the most species trophy, won four monthly prizes and a SWFSA certificate and took the cod cup with a 15-0-0 fish confirms he is an angler to watch in the future and it may not be too long before he is in contention to become club champion.

AFTER a blank spell of nearly two months, entries for boat-caught fish have flooded into the Fish of the Month competition.

I caught a 2-5-2 whiting at Godine on legered mackerel strip and decided to make an entry in the April contest.

It was a modest specimen, bearing in mind the boat record stands at 5-4-0, but in the current situation with so few boat entries, it could well have been in with a good chance of an award, including the spot prize in the monthly draw that is now open to all entrants.

However, my sole claim for the last prize was not to last long because the following day Pieter Coetzer caught an 18-12-5 turbot at Godine. He was legering a herring bait from Richard Keen’s Margaret K when he landed the big flattie, the only one boated on the trip.

It will be judged against the 30-4-0 Bailiwick record.

Another entry quickly followed. Tony Pengelley had gone out on a wreck trip with Richard Seager and caught a 2-6-5 pout on a live sandeel bait. It will be assessed against the 3-6-12 record.

The final entry in the week’s mini-rush was submitted by Roger Berry. A legered sandeel at the Banc de la Schole produced a 14-8-3 undulate ray, which will be judged against the 19-6-13 boat record.

As from tomorrow, entries will be welcomed for the May competition. Prizes up for grabs will be the Shakespeare Angling Award for the best overall fish, the J. Meerveld and Sons tankard for the top shore-caught specimen and the Boat Exchange Tankard for the best boat-caught fish.

There will be the two runner-up prizes of Bucktrout’s Bass beers, the Tackle Direct spot prize and the Aval du Creux Hotel Junior award.

Anglers are also reminded that the Phoenix Fish Bass Competition is running throughout the remainder of the year.

THERE were dozens of rods at Pembroke last weekend and lots of casts being made with weights hitting the sea up to 200 yards from the shoreline, but not one fish was caught.

The event was the casting clinic organised by Anytime Anywhere rods, in association with Tackle Direct.

Local anglers had the opportunity to try the rods for themselves, including the use of both fixed spool and multiplying reels.

The rods varied in class and length, with the longest being a remarkable 16 feet overall.
