News from the Guernsey Press

House-hunting? No, just visiting

0166280.jpgSIR MARK THATCHER has dismissed rumours he is house-hunting in Guernsey. The son of former prime minister Baroness Thatcher denied he was looking for a place to live, despite having coffee with Swoffers managing director Matthew Henry at the OGH yesterday morning.

‘I come here all the time because I have a lot of friends in Guernsey and I meet up with them regularly,’ he said. ‘In fact, I was here last week and I’ll be here next week as well.

‘I’ve known Matt for a long time and while I’m always interested in what’s going on, it would be wrong to say that I’m actively looking to buy a house.’ It was for the purpose of meeting friends rather than sightseeing that had brought him to Guernsey, said Sir Mark, 54.

‘I’ve been coming to the island since 1975 and it’s changed a lot, although it has retained a certain degree of charm.

‘If I do have half a day to spare, I might take a drive around, but that’s about it.’

Sir Mark said his mother was in ‘very good form’ at the moment.

When asked what it was like to be the son of such an icon, he said it was normal for him.

‘I’ve only ever had one mother, so it’s impossible for me to compare her to anyone else.

‘People see her as the prime minister, but I treasure her as a mother and she treasures me as a son.’

The popular myth that the baroness had survived on two or three hours’ sleep a night during her almost 12-year term as prime minister was wildly exaggerated, said Sir Mark.

‘She never had that little sleep, but if you are in any demanding job in government or industry, there are always far-reaching demands on your time.’
