Gallienne wins record 16th Guernsey crown

0431678.jpgTREVOR GALLIENNE is the Guernsey individual champion again after beating Robert Chapple jnr in the final. However, the latter did take the pairs title with Bob Chapple snr after having beaten Matt Ogier and Paul Dyer.

In an eventful night of bar billiards, aided by the games being relayed by a video camera to a wide screen TV set above the finals table, Gallienne (pictured) recaptured the individual title for a record 16th time.

The evening began with Gallienne beating Tom Olliver 13,610 to 4,200 to secure his place in the final. Chapple jnr, who has only played the game for less than two years, won his semi-final 10,760 to 6,750, after producing a break of 8,450 under pressure before touching up to take the match.

In the final, Chapple won the toss and put Gallienne in first, who started off with a break of 12,190, after which both players struggled to do anything for the rest of the game. Gallienne took the first leg 12,450 to 330.

Chapple failed to knock in a decent score on his opening break.

However, all was not lost and after some scrappy play, the youngster got the break back and ended the game on a high with a total score of 7,380 to 12,690.

He showed real potential and everyone on the night agreed that he is going to be the player to beat in future.

In the pairs final, Bob Chapple won the toss and elected for Ogier and ‘Diddy’ Dyer to take the breaks in games one and three.

Ogier took the opening one but failed to make an impact on the game and after some scrappy play, Chapple snr got the break back and knocked in a 5,240 break to take the first leg 7,050 to 2,020.

Chapple jnr took the opening break in game two but failed to set a decent score and after a lot of play, Ogier managed to get the break back and knock it a very respectable 6,680 to take the second 7,320 to 830, the two opening games both going against the break.

Dyer started off game three but did not knock in the big break everyone was expecting and after everyone had had several attempts to get the break back, Dyer succeeded and knocked in a 4k break to take the third game 5,060 to 1,040.

The Chapples had their backs to the wall going into the fourth and final game.

Being over 5k down, Chapple snr had to produce the game expected from the Channel Islands champion and in typical fashion he knocked in a faultless 10,910 break before touching up.

Ogier went to the table and managed a 2k-plus break.

On his next visit, Chapple snr managed to get the break back and played the table out to take the final game by 11,770 to 2,830, winning the pairs title on aggregate.
