Reds hit the spot to win

FOR the second year running Guernsey had to endure the heartbreak of losing the Muratti on penalties.

In front of more than 2,500 supporters at Springfield yesterday, Glyn Dyer put Guernsey ahead with a first half strike only for Jack Boyle to equalise right on the stroke of full time. When extra time and then penalties were required, it was the Jersey team and their fans who were celebrating wildly at the end after they scored four to Guernsey’s two.

They were similar scenes to last year’s Muratti at Foote’s Lane when the Sarnians lost after a penalty shoot-out. ‘Generally I thought we were going to hang on and win it inside 90 minutes, but unfortunately it was not to be,’ said Guernsey coach Steve Ogier.

‘At the end of the day it was really close and both sides had chances in extra time when the game really opened up.

‘It was anyone’s game in extra-time, too, and unfortunately for us we lost the penalty shoot-out again.

‘I thought it was an entertaining game and it had everything.’

Jersey boss Dave Kennedy was full of praise for 17-year-old Boyle, who was named man-of-the-match for his performance on the wing.

‘I thought it was slipping away with a couple of minutes to go because we didn’t get the luck we deserved,’ he said.

‘Instead of luck we got a bit of an opportunist goal from an outstanding young footballer [Boyle] and as soon as we got that goal I could not see us losing the game. I thought we would have gone on to grab the winner in extra time.

‘I thought we were the better side, but when it comes to penalties it is a lottery. I’ve got to give a lot to credit to Guernsey, too, as they stopped us from playing the way we wanted in the last third. Saying that, they had a goal threat in extra time with the big lad [Simon] Tostevin coming on and he was a threat.’
