Making some noise

BORN in Auckland, New Zealand, Chris Mounter moved to Guernsey in 1996.

The 21-year-old was educated at Beechwood and Elizabeth College and is now studying digital music at Southampton Solent University.

Over the years Chris has been known for many things, whether it be having a pint at the Dorset Arms or causing damage on his skateboard. But recently it’s his filthy underground tech that is making noise locally, as well as in Southampton.

‘I started DJing when I was 14 after my cousin persuaded me to buy some turntables,’ said Chris.

‘I began with my love of house music and all its sub genres, until I realised my real passion was for underground tech house, deep house and minimal techno.’

By 2005, it was time for university. He had been continuing to practise his passion for DJing, so it was natural that he chose a course that allowed him to get into production. He is now at the end of the second year of a BA honours in digital music.

‘For the last three years I have been splitting my time between uni in Southampton and non-term time in Guernsey,’ explained the DJ.

‘In Guernsey, I tend to play various nights in Baloo’s Bar, some of which are especially memorable.’

Highlights include New Year’s Eve 2006, which saw Chris playing to an over-crowded Baloo’s, where you couldn’t move let alone breathe. On another occasion, he played upstairs and had people dancing on the bar, tables and even the sofas.

While in Southampton, Chris spends most of his time in the studio working on productions for his forthcoming album. As for DJing, he has played at the Friday Boxxed nights at Southampton’s Junk Club and at Rhino Club and Soul Cellar for the Short Circuit and Under the Light nights.

So what’s coming up over the next few months?

‘I’m currently working on remixes for the up and coming house duo 2’s Company,’ he said.

‘They have been ruining dancefloors across London recently.

‘I am also on my way back to Guernsey soon for the summer and I am hoping to be playing a few more messy ones in Baloo’s.’
