Frith makes most of his good fortune with a ton

YOU live to regret giving a player of Jeremy Frith’s class a chance, let alone two.

Elizabeth College contrived on Saturday to drop the island all-rounder early in his innings at slip and then again at deep mid-wicket, the ball after he had reached 50 and they paid a heavy price as he went on to make an unbeaten century in Cobo’s comfortable 97-run victory at the College Field.

Frith later joked that the two offenders on this occasion – Adam Hindle and Jonny Clark respectively – knew what was good for them because as the island’s high performance coach he works closely with the duo as part of the Sussex sub-academy set-up here.

He was certainly grateful because his 103 not out was just what he needed to kick-start his season. He came to the wicket in the seventh over after Guernsey opener Matt Oliver had departed for a run-a-ball 17, bowled by left-armer Clark.

Jamie Nussbaumer, promoted in the absence of Peter Vidamour, hung around for a while, but when he went caught behind by Will Thompson trying to run Jake Le Marchant down to third man, it brought together Frith and his club and island captain, Stuart Le Prevost.

Having put on many vital, large stands in the past, Saturday’s effort of 81 perhaps does not rank among their most memorable. But it put their side into a very strong position.

Le Prevost was by far the more fluent of the two and stroked his way with relative ease to 44, including eight fours.

It came as something of a surprise, therefore, when he chipped his 48th ball straight to Tom Kirk at mid-wicket off Hindle’s medium pace to bring to an abrupt end a promising knock.

But Kris Moherndl joined Frith and kept the momentum going right to the end of the 45 overs.

After reaching his 50 with an all-run four and then surviving the next ball, Frith started opening up and his second half century flew by in seemingly no time at all.

His shot of the day was his solitary six that was lost in a neighbouring garden after having hit the back of the Scout hut roof.

With a broad grin, he likened it afterwards to a Jacob Oram special.

Moherndl became more and more agricultural as the end neared, but his shots continued to find gaps and he finished off the innings with an impressive straight six to come in 45 not out from 38 balls.

Chasing 236, College were given a steady start by captain Richard Angliss and Thompson, assisted by several early wides.

But having reached 36 for none, the hosts were soon 53 for four.

James Mullen started the collapse with a good ’un to knock over Thompson’s castle and he then dismissed Chris Whitworth as Will Garnett took a low catch at mid-on.

Nussbaumer claimed the prize wicket of Tim Ravenscroft for a duck. The Hampshire prospect survived a huge leg-before appeal on his second ball but the next delivery was a corker that took his off stump.

Angliss then played on from Nussbaumer and it was only a matter of time before Cobo finished things off.

Frith ended with three wickets with his left-arm spin, Gary Rich trapped Hindle plum in front and young Dane Mullen claimed two on his first-team debut.

‘It is pleasing to start with 40 points against a side who have the potential to give others problems this season,’ said Le Prevost.

‘Frithy made the most of his luck to make what will, I hope, be the first of many big scores this summer.’
