GRAHAM GUILBERT felt his Guernsey boxing team were the victims of some suspect judging as they lost 10-0 to a Manchester Select side. The meeting took place in a Masonic Lodge in Salford and involved local judges.

‘I’ve never ever known that – it just doesn’t happen,’ said Guilbert, the island boxing coach, about the whitewash. ‘Even the referee came up to me and shook my hand and said he did not know what was going on. Steve Walshaw [the Manchester coach] set up a meeting with the ABA last night. He said it was disgraceful.’

Guilbert said that he and Walshaw agreed that the match should have been judged 6-4 to the home side. Local fighters Jack Gilvear, Gage Demore, Adam Baker, Tom Maunder, Chris Sumner, James Woolnough, Perry Bentley and Bradley Watson all lost on points.
