FISHY results in the Olympic Games sprints is one thing, but at the Liberation Day schools’ road relay..?
But bizarrely a fish got in the way of Les Beaucamps’ hopes of winning this year’s boys’ race.
The reds were many people’s favourites for the annual trophy but were fading out of contention when Zac Hanley, their strongest runner, was attempting to close the gap when he slipped on a fish on the eastern stretch of the Castle Pier.
Up ahead, St Sampson’s, who had taken the lead on leg four of six, were holding on to win by four seconds in a best time for the new course.
At halfway in the girls’ event, Grammar and Ladies’ College were neck and neck, but the latter inched away over the final three legs and Megan Stewart brought them home by nearly three seconds, also in a new course best time. Les Beaucamps were third.
