A MAN who was assaulted by a jilted husband says he is pleased his attacker escaped prison. Jake Hamon, 37, of Les Rochers, Alderney, had to spend a night in hospital after being kicked and punched by Stephen Henshaw, from Preston, England, on 2 May.

Henshaw, a former estate agent, blamed Mr Hamon, a marine engineer, for the break-up of his marriage after having been told by his wife, Tammy, that she was intending to leave him for Mr Hamon. Mrs Henshaw and Mr Hamon, who dated as teenagers, had recently got to know each other again through internet site Facebook.

Father of two Mr Hamon said: ‘He [Henshaw] should not have gone to prison because he’s a dad.  Even if he’d put me in a wheelchair, I wouldn’t have wanted him to go to prison. No man should be taken away from his kids for something like this. I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to be kept away from his kids and he [Henshaw] is certainly not my enemy.’

Henshaw travelled from Manchester to Alderney after his wife had told him she planned to leave him and their two children, a boy, eight, and girl, three.

He attacked Mr Hamon, who at the time was working on a boat in Braye Harbour, causing a laceration inside the victim’s mouth which required eight stitches.

Mr Hamon’s jawbone also became exposed as a result of the assault and he suffered bruising beneath his left eye and an injury to his scalp.

Mr Hamon, who plays bass for Alderney rock band Skratch, says he has been truthful from the outset with his family and friends about the situation.

‘I’ve been honest with everyone who’s asked me about what’s happened, but it is not for me to say what will happen now. A lot of things still need to be sorted out.

‘I have been truthful all along and that is what has got me into this mess.

‘I feel as if I can walk around with my head held high because I’ve been honest from day one.’

Mr Hamon also said he wished to protect his children, a nine-year-old boy and five-year-old girl.

‘I did everything I could to keep my children away from this but the last thing I wanted was for my son to hear about this from someone at school,’ he said.

‘This has been very difficult for everyone involved and I can safely say I’ve never had to deal with as much pressure as this.’

Henshaw, 39, was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for three years, after pleading guilty to the unlawful and malicious wounding of Mr Hamon last week.
