GH Smit.
GH SMIT’S aggressive, all-or-bust attitude to his innings last night reaped a handsome reward. His unbeaten 124 is thought to be a record for a 16-over top flight Evening League match as he set up Rovers for a comprehensive 77-run win over Grant Thornton at the KGV.
The island star’s first three balls went for four-six-four before he gave a chance to bowler Gary De Carteret on the next. It was not taken and the blistering onslaught continued. Together with Tim Duke, who made 33 at quicker than a run a ball on his favourite track, Smit, right, was part of an opening partnership worth 136 made in less than 11 overs.
In total he faced just 60 balls, having reached 50 in 20 and his century in a further 24, striking 13 fours and six maximums as no bowler was spared from the punishment. Grant Thornton were never going to get close to a victory target of 182.
They did make a decent start, though, thanks to Jonny Clark and Arbinder Dugal who put on 42 for the opening wicket in little more than four overs.
However, momentum was lost once Rovers skipper Stuart Bisson dismissed Clark for 25 before Dugal was run out in the next over.
Rob Turville picked up a couple of wickets and there was one apiece for Liam Smyth and Robbie Le Corre.
At Port Soif, Corinthians bowled very tidily to defend comfortably their total of 113 against Salemites.
Although not scoring runs in Smit proportions, David Hooper maintained his fine form as he top-scored for the victors with 34 while others chipped in around him.
Ed Sherbourne and Keith Le Cheminant then bowled miserly spells first up for the blues and Salemites left were playing catch up despite useful knocks of 25 from both Martin Robert and Ollie Lepp.
In the end, they fell 31 runs short.
