‘Build it and they will come’

0577534.jpgLIBERATION Day entertainment was a vast improvement on 2007 – that appears to be the consensus among islanders.

Last year’s event was tarnished slightly by the initial shock of the introduction of alcohol-free zones, but this year saw the return of a licensed bar to the Albert Pier and inevitably the subsequent return of the crowds.

Yet, according to islanders, the most celebrated comeback was that of the Vale Earth Fair’s Liberated Earth Stage.

The collective decided against holding its annual concert last year amid concerns over the impact of drinking restrictions, but made a welcome return on Friday.

Bands in the line-up included local and UK acts, all of which proved very popular with the crowd, extra kudos being given for the inclusion of Al Sation and the German Shepherds, who, according to the public, were perfect for the event.

‘I thought they were fantastic,’ said local musician Dave Fuller.

‘They’re exactly right for the crowd – just what you need at this moment, in this liberated place.

‘I loved the guy with the big moustache but the whole band played great songs. I was on next and my set was very different, so I was concerned that I might have been outshone.’

Dave’s set with Sons of Lolita ended up a very atmospheric one, perfectly suited to a day when the vibes were free-flowing. The use of a trumpeter added a slice of jazz to the blend of blues and rock – very chilled.

Of course, local pioneers Thee Jenerators were as popular as ever and singer Mark Le Gallez used the extra stage space to the full, displaying his great showmanship.

Fitting in with this year’s theme of ‘Ration, Reuse and Recycle’, Cornwall’s Big Beat went down a treat. The band uses nothing but recycled instruments and took to the stage armed with drainpipes, a kitchen sink and even a shopping trolley.

‘We nicked the shopping trolley for the event – so cheers Marks & Spencer’s,’ joked one of the drummers.

Whether it was the musical delights or cuisine delicacies from the Normandy Markets that made your Liberation Day, the Globe hopes you had a fantastic time – roll on next year.
