GREG GUILLE has rebuilt his racing car for this year’s French hill-climb season. The Guernseyman has competed for a number of years in the French National Championship.

And for the 2008 season he decided to give his Condor Ferries-sponsored ADR Sport 2 sports prototype machine a complete revision. The car is completely new from the driving seat backwards.

‘I found that with the car built to the English regulations, the French cars had an advantage that I was never going to overcome,’ said Guille. ‘I took a long, hard look at the French competition regulations and decided to convert the car to improve its performance against the opposition. I have acted as chief designer and project head for the work. This has meant that I have been able to control the design concept.’

Guille received help from Richard Vaudin at TURX Custom Workshop and ATEC Engineering’s Adrian Marsh. A new chassis was designed and grafted onto the remaining front section. A lighter and more powerful Suzuki 900cc engine replaced the BMW bike one. The original rear transmission system was changed for a stronger and more reliable ‘QUAIFE’ system.

With the alterations made, Guille took the machine to the Fay de Bretagne test track near Nantes.

The car ran at up to 148mph and, according to Guille, it still had plenty left.

‘I was really, really pleased that it went well all day,’ he said.

The last weekend, in his first competitive-run out of the season at the 2.5km St Lo hill climb, Guille pulled out all the stops to ensure that he won the open invitation class.

‘I was like a dog with two tails,’ he said.

‘It all went really well.’

Unfortunately it was not so rosy for fellow Sarnian Colin Le Maitre, whose car would not start before the practice runs and he was unable to take part.

Guille and Le Maitre expect to travel to France a number of times during the summer to compete in the series.

The highlight will undoubtedly be the European Hill-Climb Championship at Cote du Mont Dore in early August.

‘It’s the FA Cup final of hill-climbing,’ said Guille.
