TOWN saw its biggest market of the season so far on Saturday. Stalls selling goods from designer jewellery, flowers and food to art lined the piazza area by the Markets.
The band of the Royal Corps of Signals and saxophonist Colin Falla provided the music. ‘We have done quite a few small markets in winter, but we decided to make this one much bigger and they will be weekly from now on,’ said Kay Leslie of Terrace Promotions.
Corinne Bacon of Eunike, who was selling hand-made jewellery and fascinators, was trading at the event for the first time. ‘It’s been brilliant and business has been very brisk,’ she said. ‘I think it’s a fantastic idea and just what Guernsey needs. It’s a really good atmosphere.’
A large part of Market Square was taken up with Les Bourgs Hospice’s As Good As New stand, which was selling everything from clothes and books to CDs, DVDs, cakes, produce and plants. Money raised will go towards the hospice’s redevelopment, which is expected to cost about £3m.
‘The fund has yet to reach the £1m. mark but director of nursing Jo Boyd said great efforts were being made.
‘We know it’s a big ask, but we are working hard to achieve it,’ she said.
The hospice is run without States funding.
Hospice shop manageress Gwen Moore said about 30 volunteers had been involved in making the market event happen and they had begun setting up at 7.30am. Goods had been put aside since January.
Rabey’s Garage provided two lorries to get everything to the square.
‘We weren’t supposed to be open until 10am, but we were selling at 8.30am because you can’t miss the opportunity,’ said Mrs Moore.
She said every penny taken went to the cause.
‘It’s a charity that affects everybody on the island in one way or another,’ she said.
Mrs Moore said big thanks were owed to the regular volunteers. Some 45 people currently work at the shop in Mont Arrive but more would be welcome.
‘We need at least six on at a time and people can do as much as they want,’ she said.
Interested parties should call Mrs Moore on 700826.
