THE Yorkshire Guernsey Division One will be decided tonight. The season has come down to Le Mont Saint Subaru’s meeting with Collins Stewart at Beau Sejour (8pm start) as, whoever wins, takes the league.
‘I can’t remember the last time it’s come down to a head-to-head and I’m pleased that it’s come to this,’ said the Guernsey Basketball Association president and Subaru player-coach Pete Beausire.
‘I was worried last week that that it was going to be a three-way split and no one wants to win on points difference. I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a good game. At the start of the season we were both favourites and it now comes down to a head to head between us.’
The match was turned into the title decider when Subaru got the better of Collins Stewart Inferno on Friday evening. If Inferno had won, they would have still been contention for the title along with Subaru and Collins.
Inferno had beaten Subaru in the Division One knockout final two days before but it was the Mont Saint team who won the rematch quite convincingly 67-45.
‘They had a couple of injuries from Wednesday,’ said Beausire.
‘Jason Hooper didn’t play and that was quite a major fall for them. He’s been averaging 23 points a game. Liam Smyth was there for three quarters but he left the court injured in the fourth.
‘We were more composed than we were on Wednesday. Everyone kept their heads and we played well as a team.’
Subaru go into tonight’s match with a full team whereas Collins are missing their influential captain, Nigel Govett.
The centre dislocated his knee during their league match with Le Mont Saint Fiat a week last Saturday.
He is expected to be out until well into next season.
‘It’s a blow, although, thinking back, he was missing in the game we beat them, so maybe that’s a tell-tell sign,’ said Collins’ player-coach Jeff Stuart.
‘Without him we’re not the same looking team as we’ve not got the same inside presence, but it just means that other guys have to step up and maybe it will be more unpredictable for them.
‘I always preach the team ethos. We’re strong as a team and that’s the advantage we’ve got.’
The other player Collins are missing is Kerry Smyth.
The guard is back in the island from New York for a short while but misses tonight with a knee injury.
Apart from that, Collins go into the clash with a full-strength team and Stuart is feeling confident.
‘The good thing is that we always have great games,’ he said.
‘It will be a great game and a great finish to the season. It’s always good when it comes down to the final game.’
