The Globe first met Kiri Knight a few months ago when we interviewed her for a charity special in which we discovered more about the Blind Association and the Dyslexia Day Centre.
Before we had even finished our first cup of tea with Kiri, we realised what a fiercely independent and self-sufficient young woman she was.
Kiri enjoyed not just one but two parties when she reached 21 recently. Her first celebration took place at Rosie Jacques bistro and bar.
‘We had a barbeque. The weather was lovely and I think I caught the sun. My mum got out the karaoke machine and I sang Leona Lewis,’ she said.
‘I also went to France with my gran and we did lots of shopping – I bought a dress for my party. I love France and I love crepes.’
A party and a trip to France were not the only birthday presents Kiri received. A surprise visit from her favourite Island FM presenter, James Bentley, certainly put a smile on her face.
He arrived at a party the Blind Association threw for Kiri with a card, a gift and a big kiss for the birthday girl.
‘I got invited a while back, so I made sure I had nothing else on,’ said James, who enjoyed a chat with Kiri over a cup of tea and some birthday cake.
‘I know she is a big fan of the show and for people like Kiri who can’t really watch television, the radio is important, so I felt it was important for me to come today.’
The Globe team also tagged along to present the Blind Association with the money we have been raising for it and the Dyslexia Day Centre since the beginning of March.
Kiri received quite a few gifts on her birthday, including jewellery, chocolates and a jumper from her gran.
‘It felt strange turning 21 at first, but now its OK. I didn’t want my party to end on Sunday and got quite tearful when it finished,’ she said.
‘I want to thank my mum and step-dad Terry for my party on Sunday and the Blind Association for my party today, and thank James for coming down.’
