ST PETER Port School celebrates its 40th birthday this year. The school was opened in October 1968 by HRH Princess Alexandra, but the anniversary will take place in June as this will be its 40th academic year.
On Saturday 28 June the school will hold its open day, giving former pupils the chance to visit. It is due to close in 2009 so this will be one of the last opportunities for islanders to look around it.
‘The school will also be reasonably full in June, as from September we will only have Years 9 and 11, so that was another reason we chose this date. With more students it will be more of a celebration,’ said head teacher Ken Wheeler
‘The open day is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect. A lot of people remember their school days with great pleasure and it’s just the chance for them to come and see one another. It’s for everybody who took something from St Peter Port. They can look back and celebrate.’
Past pupils and teachers will attend the open day, as well as present students.
Mr Wheeler said there would be some of the original rolls on show allowing people to find past pupils. They can see how much has changed in the 40 years as well.
Two former head teachers will also be present. One past student who will be attending is Michelle Pearce, formerly Michelle Shorto. Mrs Pearce was the school’s first head girl when it opened.
She met current and the final head girl, Emma Lloyd, as well as head boy Adam Martel.
‘It’s quite strange,’ said Mrs Pearce on meeting Miss Lloyd.
‘I think they will experience the same feeling celebrating 40 years as I did when the school opened. I was very excited,’ she said.
‘I had lunch with the princess and it was a great experience. I have kept in touch with those from my secretarial group and we had a 40th reunion a few weeks ago.
‘I’m obviously sad that it’s closing but then it is still going to be in use for a while so in one way it won’t really be closing.’
n If any former students have photographs of their year group, the school would like to scan and display and make them available to other past pupils.
It would also like to hear from any school record holders who have had their names inscribed on trophies.
* In September of last year Vauvert Year 6 pupils were transferred to La Mare de Carteret and those from Amherst were moved to St Sampson’s Secondary. That will be the case for the current Year 6s.
* In September, Year 9 from St Peter Port will transfer to La Mare de Carteret and St Sampson’s High School.
