Anees stays alert to win

0582444.jpgWASIF ANEES was not wanting to crow about his Charity Open Classic win at La Grande Mare.

In fact, by his own admission he was a little embarrassed to have walked away with the trophy after 36 holes of strokeplay and then a sudden-death play-off with Neil Black.

After two days of testing golf in rain and, on day two, gusting winds, Anees (pictured) and Black had finished level on 130, one shot clear of Brian Loveridge. Back out they went and one hole later Anees, a five handicap, had secured the trophy.

‘It was quite embarrassing,’ he said, two days later having slipped out of the Fortis Island Championships at L’Ancresse. ‘Neil had been in the bar for an hour and had a couple of pints,’ added Anees, who virtually walked off one hole to the next for the play-off and felt he had clearly benefited from his rival having switched off. ‘He was cold and hooked it, and I got my par,’ said the 2008 champion of this very worthy competition which raises a large amount of money for local charities.

Anees, who had sat on 63 overnight with Richard Le Poidevin and Brian O’Mahoney, returned a second-day 67 despite his second successive double-bogey seven at the last.

Playing with Geoff Davies and James Blower, who had both scored opening 61s to share the halfway lead, Anees again played steadily while his playing partners faltered.

But even after his last-hole disaster, he felt confident.

‘I still thought I had a chance at that point.’

What he did not know was that Black, who had shot a 66 on the Saturday, had gone so well on day two.

‘Neil must have played fantastically,’ said Anees.

Davies eventually finished fifth, four shots behind the leaders, while Black took the scratch prize for his gross rounds of 71 and 69.

June Le Poidevin was the leading woman with a net 141.
