THE biggest slowpitch softball tournament of the year is taking place this weekend. Held on the Beau Sejour diamonds, the Sarnian Roofing Open tournament sees seven teams battle it out today, tomorrow and Monday.
Rain is forecast for the weekend, but Guernsey Softball Association committee member Matt Marquis believes it will be a cracking event if the weather behaves itself. ‘It depends on the weather,’ he said.
‘If the weather holds off it should be good. We’ve got the five top local teams plus the Mariners and the Sharks, who are both based in the Solent area.’ The two visiting sides have entered the competition before.
Mariners are a social side comprising players from the Solent League that take part in grade A and B competitions.
‘They are very good – they are made of the best players in their league,’ said Marquis.
‘The Sharks enter year after year. They don’t bring their strongest team over, but they are good as well.
‘The two should be in the semis.’
The Guernsey sides involved are Mavericks, Blue Sox, Condor, Rangers and Tornados.
The action gets under way at 9.30 this morning as Mavericks take on Blue Sox, with today’s last match at 4.30pm.
Tomorrow follows the same format and the final is due to take place at 3.30pm on Monday.
Last year’s champions Triton Legdra-ggers’s name will not be on the cup as the side have since disbanded.
But the weekend is not only about competition on the pitch. It is as much a social event with a BBQ and refreshments van on the go the whole time.
Marquis encourages people to come and have a look.
‘It’s free for people to come up,’ he said.
‘There will be a good atmosphere.’
