Angela de Garis seems pleased with her effort.
TORTEVAL CHURCH was filled with flora at the weekend.
As part of the festival by the Guernsey Flower Arrangement Society, the church showcased some 26 arrangements.
The church chose the theme of From Sea to Sea, No Man is an Island, with some artistic and creative as well as fun displays. More than 500 people visited over the bank holiday weekend.
Society chairwoman Jenny Cottell said that the annual festival always featured fantastic arrangements. ‘We have a whole list of churches that would like us to do a display because it brings people into the church. The committee liaised with the church and came up with the ideas and everybody was given a title.’
The church got involved in some of the creations with Torteval Youth Choir making a display, which included a mermaid, entitled Under the Sea. The Torteval Pre-school Group created The Lighthouse Keepers’ Lunch.
‘This is a really nice church to do it in,’ said Mrs Cottell.
‘From the outside it looks really dark, but inside it’s really light and airy.
‘There have been some really good ideas and they’ve obviously done a lot of research.’
This was the first time Helen O’Meara had been involved. She said that she always had the interest but never the time.
Her creation was entitled Madagascar.
‘I went to my first demonstration at St James, which was hosted by Mary Kirkpatrick. Her enthusiasm was contagious and she said we would do something together.
‘When I did this I was so worried about it beforehand but everybody was so helpful. I will definitely do it again next year.’
Jean Cloarec was given Lindisfarne as her title. She said that she took the idea of a monastery but also had a little help from Songs of Praise, which had focused on the island a week before.
‘I used a lot of grasses as there’s a lot of that on the island and then I just added a bit of colour. It took me about four hours to do. This was the second time I have taken part, but I have been going to classes for about five years.
‘I think the exhibits are all wonderful and the ideas are so great.’
