DEFENDING champion Sue Wellfair was taken to extra holes in her quarter-final yesterday evening before progressing to the last four of the Fortis Island Women’s Championship.

Di Aitchison gave the number one seed a real test before Wellfair came through on the 20th.  She will today face Gill Burford, who defeated Debbie Richards 5 and 4, for a place in the final. At the other end of the draw, Jan Chamberlain, seeded two, overcame Di Stenner 5 and 3 to set up a semi-final with number three seed Kay Mapley, who was a 3 and 2 winner over Joan Bichard.

Two juniors are through to the semi-finals of the bronze division tournament.  Twelve-year-old Aimee Ponte recorded the most resounding victory of the evening – 7 and 6 against Kathryn Touzeau – to set up a meeting with reigning champion and number one seed Wilma Nicolle. The latter beat Monica Thomas 3 and 1.

Meanwhile, teenager Beki Le Cheminant overcame Julie Solway 2 and 1 to remain on course for her second consecutive final appearance. She will play Lynne Coutanche, a 6 and 4 winner over Jayne Colbourne, in the other semi-final.
