ST SAMPSON’S High will set the standard for new secondary schools in Guernsey, according to Education minister Carol Steere.

The new board yesterday toured the site, which also houses Le Murier, along with the department’s senior staff and head teacher designates Hazel Tetlaw and Alex Brown.

‘I’m thrilled with the development. I think it’s amazing and really sets the standard for the other two secondary schools, Les Beaucamps and La Mare de Carteret.

‘All credit to the staff and the previous board for bringing this project forward,’ said Deputy Steere.  ‘The pledge was made to the secondary sector, the rebuilding of the schools.  This is the first one in that programme of work.  Hopefully, Les Beaucamps will come along soon.

‘We want to open up the school to the public so that all parents and students in the island can get a feel for the direction the board wants to take, the plans and proposals for upgrading the facilities so they are fit for the 21st century.’

Environment is expected to announce the direction of a one-way system around the school soon after the new board overturned the decision of its predecessor.

Deputy Steere said Education was supportive of ensuring students’ well-being.

‘I hope that residents will see that it has to be done for the safety of the pupils.

‘If they are inconvenienced then that’s unfortunate but, from our point of view, as long as children are safe going to and from the school, that’s Education’s concern. It’s for Environment to take on the concerns on the residents.’

The new schools will open in September as planned and are on budget.

Education member David De Lisle said it was a wonderful facility for educating young people in the north of Guernsey.

‘We’re just hoping in the west that we will see facilities equal to this in the near future,’ he said.

‘We’re very positive that we need them and we will get them.

‘I will be pushing very hard to see we get Les Beaucamps developed and Le Mare de Carteret underway quickly.’

Both head teacher designates agreed the new facilities were fantastic and were delighted with the progress being made.
