THREE of the island’s facilities will feature in London 2012’s Pre-Games Guide for Paralympic sports. The organising committee announced the list of successful venues yesterday and will publish its guide of both Olympic and Paralympic facilities later in the summer.
In March, it was revealed that Guernsey’s facilities for archery, athletics, badminton, sailing and table tennis had been listed as potential training camps for the Olympic Games. Three of those, athletics, sailing and table tennis, have also met the criteria to be able to host teams wanting to prepare for the Paralympics.
‘Having got the five sports into the Olympic guide it’s good that we’ve managed to get these in as well,’ said the Guernsey Sports Commission development manager Graham Chester.
More than 170 sporting facilities have been chosen to be included in a brochure that will be sent to all the Olympic countries towards the end of the year.
The countries then decide where they want to prepare for the London Games.
The London 2012 Olympic Committee’s sport department conducted the review process with input from the National Governing Bodies of Sport, the British Paralympic Association and the Sports Councils for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Local London 2012 contacts and regional experts specialising in disability sport have also provided guidance.
It has been a comprehensive analysis of high quality, elite Paralympic sporting facilities in the UK.
The facilities have been assessed with a strong focus on standards of accessibility and accommodation, plus the commitment of the facilities to co-operate with National Paralympic Committees.
Those facilities selected are either capable of hosting a wide variety of sports or have been chosen as a Centre of Excellence specialising in hosting a specific sport such as Paralympic Athletics.
Lord Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee, said: ‘The facilities listed in this guide will really help overseas athletes and teams to prepare well for London 2012.
‘The assessment process we have conducted shows that there is a good spread of high quality sporting facilities for athletes across the board.
‘I hope that as many teams and athletes as possible take advantage of these facilities. Our vision is to use the games to inspire change and change attitudes towards people with a disability.
‘We look forward to welcoming Paralympic athletes to the UK in 2012.’
The guide will be launched at the Beijing Games, after which time it will be available online.
