Supporting role: Flybe ambassador Matt Le Tissier, left, and Guernsey Press director and general manager Mark Lewis launch the airline’s Island Heroes campaign.
FOOTBALL legend Matt Le Tissier has today launched a campaign to find unsung local heroes.
The Flybe ambassador is encouraging islanders to get involved in Flybe Island Heroes, a bursary run in association with the Guernsey Press, which is open to anyone in the community involved in education, sport or charity.
The airline will give £10,000 to the winner of each category.
This will be made up of £5,000 cash and £5,000 in vouchers that can be used to fly anywhere on the Flybe network from Guernsey.
The initiative will run for the next three years with Flybe investing more than £90,000.
Matt said the Flybe Island Heroes appeal was a fantastic opportunity for individuals or organisations to receive funding for something they would not otherwise be able to afford.
‘It is a great initiative and a good amount of money that could make a real difference to an organisation or individual,’ he said.
‘I would definitely encourage as many people as possible to nominate organisations or individuals they think are worthy.
‘This is a good opportunity to recognise people’s achievements and create awareness of individuals or organisations that are less known for their work and contribution,’ he said.
Applicants have to tell Matt and the other judges, who will be announced next week, in no more than 250 words why their nominee deserves the prize.
Flybe marketing manager Ian Taylor said the ultimate decision over who became the three Flybe Island Heroes of 2008 would be down to islanders.
‘We think it is important that the public, who support many organisations themselves, have a choice in the outcome.
‘It is important they chose three winners who they believe are worthy of receiving the bursary.’
Guernsey Press director and general manager Mark Lewis said: ‘The Guernsey Press is absolutely delighted to be involved in The Flybe Island Heroes initiative.
‘As a community newspaper it is essential to involve ourselves with this type of initiative and to recognise the fantastic work going on in the community in sport, charity and education.’
Anyone who knows an island sporting, education or charity hero – or even all three – is asked to nominate them in writing.
