THE eight Guernsey marksmen who will compete for the Channel Islands Championship against Jersey were decided in a high quality meeting at Fort Le Marchant.
A Queen’s I course of fire, in which the marksmen fire two sighting shots and seven shots to count at 300, 500 and 600 yards, decided the eight. At 300 yards club captain Peter Jory (pictured) opened his account with a 35.03, but he was headed at this stage by Sylvia Sirett on 35.05 with some six other shooters losing a single point, including Pete Sirett who dropped his last, to count for the third time this season.
Moving back to 500 yards, Phil Ogier and Jory both scored a maximum possible 35.07 followed by Pete Sirett, getting it right for a change, on 35.06 and Bob Cushing on 35.05 while Sylvia Sirett dropped her last, to count for a 34.03.
The overall winner takes the Leale Trophy and as the competitors assembled on the hill at 600 yards, Jory’s score of 70.10 gave him a narrow one point advantage over a chasing pack of no fewer than five shooters led by Ogier on 69.12.
Sylvia Sirett completed her shoot at 600 yards with a superb first time maximum 35.07 for a total of 104.15.
Moments later Jory slotted them all in for a 35.04 and claimed the trophy with a maximum total of 105.14.
The strange and very pleasing thing about the scores is that no fewer than five marksmen lost just a single point.
Ogier had the highest V-bull count with 104.18 to take the runner-up spot just ahead of Sylvia Sirett, Pete Sirett with 104.14, Cushing with 104.13 and Richard Perkins on 104.12.
Pete Sirett was the top B-class shot and took the Albiges Spoon by four points from Cherry Le Poidevin who suffered from a poor score at 300 yards.
The Guernsey Rifle Club was grateful for the assistance it received from Wave Telecom to allow the competition to go ahead. Their diving team and support boat temporarily suspended activities on their new cable link that was within the range danger area.
