IAN CARRE produced one of the best rounds of golf ever seen on the St Pierre Park par-three course and put it down to his move to the Royal Guernsey.
Carre, a seven handicap, shot a remarkable level-par 54 gross to win the scratch competition at the June Medal staged at St Pierre.
He shot six birdies and it all came after a disastrous treble-bogey opening. ‘I went long and out of bounds,’ said Carre. ‘I thought the wind was stronger than it was. It was only an inch out of bounds but an inch is enough.
‘It was not a good start and I also double-bogeyed the fifth. I lost my first ball there and had to play another provisional, but then the birdies started.’
All told, his round comprised nine pars and one more bogey, at the 14th, but his birdie count bettered by three his previous best on the course where he learned his game and favours using a pitching wedge.
‘It served me well. It’s the main club I use around there.’
Carre, who switched to the Royal Guernsey earlier this year, said that playing off grass all the time had helped his ball striking a lot.
And the six birdies owed little to great putting.
‘I had only two really long putts, the rest were nearly all tap-ins.’
- THE course record off the white competition tees at St Pierre is 53 and is held by arguably the club’s top modern-day player, James Le Cras.
