MARTYN DESPERQUES will go up against 2005 world champion Shaun Murphy later this month.

The Sarnian’s reward for winning the Individual Snooker League was an invitiation to compete in the World Series of Snooker 2008, being launched in Jersey.

Desperques will battle against current world number three Murphy in a best of seven match. The 2005 champion will have his eye on the 150,000 euro series prize pot so the Guernseyman is assured of a tough match.

The best local player in each event will also play in the series grand final in Germany in November so there is plenty to play for, for all the Channel Island players.

Tournament organisers firmly believe that this tournament format will one day uncover a local hero, who may then look forward to an exciting future.

Desperques will play Murphy in the second session of Jersey’s round of the World Series of Snooker at Fort Regent on Saturday 21 June, starting at 5pm.

The winner will play either  another former world champion, John Higgins, or Jersey champion Aaron Canavan in a best of nine semi on the Sunday, with the televised final in the evening.

Pat Mooney, CEO of FSTC Sports Management and series promoter, said: ‘The team and I are looking forward to welcoming Martyn to the tour as a credible contender and we would like to express our thanks to the Guernsey Billiards and Snooker Association for all their support and hard work arranging the qualifiers for this event.’
