MATT WARREN has confirmed that he will leave Sylvans if they do not sign any new players during the June transfer window.
Word has been going about that the island captain was going to move away from the westerners. He denied that was 100% certain, but has called on the reds to pick up some new names.
‘If Sylvans don’t sign a few players, then I’ll be going else-where,’ he said. ‘I’m going to see what movement is going on in June. I need something fresh and I need a challenge.’
After promising so much last season, Sylvans finished a disappointing fourth in the Priaulx. Warren is also disillusioned with all the furore surrounding the Guernsey Football Association’s plans for the local game.
The GFA is intent on scrapping the Jackson and Youth One leagues and replacing them with an under-23 development league, among other things.
Some clubs are opposed to the changes and, as a result, Dave Nussbaumer last week resigned as the association chairman.
He said that there was a lack of confidence in his position as chairman from some of the clubs.
It is uncertain what shape the competitions will take from next season and everything is expected to come to a head at the GFA’s annual meeting a week today.
Warren believes changes need to be made.
‘It’s a complete farce at the moment,’ he said.
‘It’s really frustrating with what we’ve got going on with the leagues.
‘I need something new. As everyone knows, football is deteriorating.’
Warren declined to go on the record and say whom he would join, but rumours have been circulating that he would go to Rangers.
He came very close to joining them a couple of years ago and had put pen to paper, but an administration error resulted in him signing the wrong form.
He then changed his mind and the transfer fell through.
St Martin’s could be another club that could benefit from his services next season.
The club features heavily in the transfer gossip that is doing the rounds at the moment.
Island players Ryan Tippett, Marc McGrath and Ollie McKenzie have all been linked to the black-and-whites.
Meanwhile, Sylvans defender Sam Matthews is also said to be going back to North.
However, the GFA official in charge of overseeing the transfers, Garry Cortez, has said that he is yet to hand out any forms since the start of June.
He also does not believe that the uncertainty around the leagues is stopping players from moving.
‘I think they will start moving next week or the week after,’ he said.
