KRIS MOHERNDL is looking to make the most of his chance to bat at three in the Evening League this season.
He did just that last night as Cobo chased down 139 with more than three overs to spare at Port Soif. Together with TJ Ozanne, the ECC academy player put on an unbeaten second-wicket stand of 118 to take the game away from old rivals Optimists.
Both rode their luck at times – and unfortunate bowler Steve Queripel will seldom have less luck again – but importantly they always looked to be positive and ran extremely hard. Ozanne has been struggling for form in the opening weeks of the season, but he ground it out on this occasion with a valuable 28.
It was young Moherndl who took the lead role and hit five fours as well as a couple of big sixes in an impressive 50-ball knock worth 85.
Earlier, Tim de Putron had struck 52 from just 41 balls at the top of the Optimists order, an innings which included six fours and a maximum.
Having lost Mark Clapham early on, skipper Andy Biggins provided support before Mark Jefferies joined in on the act with an unbeaten 45.
The number four hit two fours and a couple of sixes.
Tom Magson chipped in with a useful 21 as well.
At the KGV, Rovers were never in danger of losing to Salemites once they had posted a mammoth 201 from their 20 overs.
During their opening partnership, Tim Duke (44) actually outscored GH Smit but the South African ended as his side’s top contributor with 62.
‘We look to target the new ball to set us up for a good total,’ said Rovers captain Stuart Bisson.
Luke Nussbaumer connected with some lusty blows later on in a cameo of 34 not out.
Salemites fell 77 runs short in reply.
