Dave Brehaut was second with two lesser-spotted dogfish, three pollack, one mackerel and a 10-0-0 conger, for which the club awards a straight 30 points. The overall value of his catch was 72.
Liz Dewe was third with four mackerel, one pollack, one lesser-spotted dogfish and a 3-3-0 grey mullet for 8-6-0 and 61.5 points.
As a result of the match both Dewe and Glyn Williams retained their championship position as leader and runner-up respectively. The main beneficiary of the competition was winner Curry, who rose from eighth to third.
n PAUL MCLAREN needed two bass to win the West Coast Sea Anglers Club all-night competition. They weighed a total of 9-4-0 and gave him 97 points.
The event, the fifth in the seven-match Guernsey shore series attracted 15 members and eight found fish. The total catch consisted of two bass, 16 mackerel, two sole, four lesser-spotted dogfish, two shore rockling and three pollack.
The competition kitty was shared between McLaren, who had the heaviest bass, 5-14-0, and Roger Robinson who had the biggest pollack, 2-7-0.
Second on the day was Matt Mahy, who had 12 mackerel for 7-4-0 and 53 points, while Steve Greenway was third with a sole and a shore rockling for 1-10-0 and 44.5 points.
Despite not scoring, Mark Hooper remains in the lead in the shore championship with 223.25 points. Robinson is in the runner-up spot with 195.5.
n TWO young anglers have made an entry in the June Fish of the Month competition, hoping to win the Aval de Creux Hotel monthly junior award. The first was Marcus Crittell.
He went out with Richard Keen to a wreck west of Guernsey, where his pirk artificial bait was seized by a 21-4-0 cod, which will be judged against the 39-0-0 boat record. He was closely followed by Jack Robilliard. He fished a shore mark at Albecq where his legered ragworm bait was taken by a 2-2-6 Couch’s sea bream. It will be assessed against the 2-15-1 Bailiwick shore record.
Another shore-caught entry has come from Lee Gillot. He float-fished a bread bait at a Belle Greve Bay mark and hooked a 4-7-7 grey mullet. This will be judged against the 11-14-6 shore best.
There are encouraging signs that, at last, catches are starting to improve, probably due to the gradual clearance of the cloudy water that has been present for weeks.
Pollack have now been reported on many inshore marks, mackerel are giving well, both afloat and on shore, and bass, albeit modest specimens, are being caught in some numbers. One disappointment is the scarcity of turbot and brill. After a number of bumper years, catches have slumped dramatically.
