ON THE PITCH Guernsey’s senior island cricket team flattered to deceive and lost to the MCC by three wickets at Port Soif.
But off it they received a boost with news that the Guernsey Cricket Board had secured Barclays Wealth as its new sponsor in the largest agreement ever seen by the local game.
The two-year deal was welcomed by GCB chairman David Piesing. ‘This new agreement with Barclays Wealth is by far the biggest sponsorship agreement that Guernsey cricket has seen to date and comes at a time when the senior national side is preparing for regionaI ICC European and hopefully World Cricket League events.
‘It will enable us to do so much more than we can at present in preparing the players in the best way possible, including working even more closely with Sussex CCC under our fantastic partnership agreement, assisting university-based and locally-based players to attend more regular winter weekend sessions at Hove,’ said Piesing, who listed other benefits.
‘It will finance our ever-increasing usage of indoor and outdoor practice facilities, investing in specialist physiotherapy and fitness conditioning resources and so much more.
‘None of this would be possible at a time when we are continually looking to meet new playing standards and so we are absolutely delighted.
‘Barclays Wealth have already proved to be fantastic supporters of Guernsey cricket and we hope to reward them with an excellent profile from success in our forthcoming tournaments.’
The need to raise overall standards was highlighted again on Saturday with another one-sided Championship clash at KGV where Cobo slaughtered an Argylls team including Matt Le Tissier.
Matt Oliver (143 not out) and Jeremy Frith (104 not out) both helped themselves to hundreds as Cobo rattled up 309 for one against a weak attack.
The former Southampton and England footballer was one of four Le Tissiers in the side and coming on sixth change his two overs went for 26.
But with the bat Matt out-scored his brothers and nephew with 15 in a paltry 82 all out.
At Port Soif, it was Rovers who were the greatly under-strength outfit and it cost them against Optimists.
Chasing 170 for victory Optimists got home by seven wickets with 14 balls to spare.
Tom Magson followed up his half-century against the MCC in midweek with 57, while the consistent Mark Clapham top-scored with 63.
