Deputies dress to kill – but still they come last

DESPITE their last- place finish at the inaugural Legis bowls tournament at the Corbet Field, Mary Lowe, who was part of the unlucky Deputies team, was still happy with the day.

‘It was a great day and at least we won a prize, even though it was the wooden spoon,’ she said. She also praised the patience of their coach, Deputy Tom Le Pelley. ‘After about the first hour of bowling, he was beginning to see that he had taken on more than he could chew.’ Deputy Lowe also laughed at the suggestion that there was some friendly competition with the media from BBC Guernsey.

‘They wanted to beat us, but we weren’t too concerned with being ahead of them. The main thing was that the event was a great success and everyone had a great day out. I would certainly take part again in the future if asked.’

Designed to introduce newcomers to the sport, the tournament was made up of a unique format in which there were eight teams of invited non-bowlers.

Specsavers and Saffrey Champness fielded two teams each and fours from Ogiers, Legis, BBC Guernsey and the Deputies made up the number.

All the teams had been invited to take part in practice sessions over the fortnight before the event and were all allocated an experienced club bowler to act as their coach and non-playing captain.

The day began with breakfast for the eight teams, which were placed into two groups of four, with each team playing six ends against each other in a round robin format.

After lunch the top team from each group played off in the final and it proved an inter-company affair, with Saffrey Champness One going up against Saffrey Champness Two.

It was a very competitive match, with Saffrey Champness Two coming out on top by five shots to three.

For their efforts they won the Legis Tournament trophy, winners medals and a £250 cash prize.

Runners-up medals and £100 in cash were presented to Saffreys One.

The BBC Guernsey team and Ogiers’ Odd Balls faced each other for third and fourth places and the latter edged home to claim third and £50 in cash.

All the players were complete newcomers to the sport but despite that there was some good-quality bowling and many of the competitors showed an interest in continuing to bowl in the future.

Everybody was in agreement that the day has been enjoyable and it was declared a great success by both the organisers and by the sponsor, Legis.
