AN ADVOCATE’S efforts on his bicycle have raised nearly £6,000 for Les Bourgs Hospice development fund.
Ian Beattie rode 30 times up Le Val des Terres on Saturday afternoon, having previously completed the 30/30 Challenge. The climbs took him two hours 50 minutes and supporters collected £1,825 in buckets.
‘It was brilliant,’ said Advocate Beattie. ‘People were so generous in every way. There was the generosity of people who assisted me and the people who gave money. Then there were the drivers who put up with me delaying them on the hill.
‘Seeing the good side of everyone was my abiding memory.’ Advocate Beattie said his thighs had ached during the first two or three climbs. The feeling wore off, but returned when he had about five to go.
‘It was a question of plugging away, as if I’d pushed myself I could have blown up very easily,’ he said.
Hospice fund-raiser Mira Domaille, who helped collect money from the roadside, said Advocate Beattie had ‘looked as fresh as a daisy’ when he finished.
She said she was amazed at the generosity of drivers and said the traffic queues that built up as he climbed the hill had been ideal targets for the cash collectors.
‘One driver put £60 in the bucket,’ she said. ‘People were so generous and we’d like to thank them all.’
Advocate Beattie had also completed the 30/30 Challenge, which required riding for at least an hour a day on 30 consecutive days.
A keen cyclist, he said he had ridden for about 85 hours during the 30 days. He secured nearly £4,000 in sponsorship for that part of his challenge.
‘I’m hoping that people will chip a bit more in now that I’ve done the 30 hill climbs and it would be great to get past the £6,000 mark,’ said the partner at Carey Olsen.
