Business from the Guernsey Press

Being safe is one way of lifting profit

Chairman Andrew Mills (pictured) said proper assessment of workplace practices helped to avoid errors and costly mistakes as well as enhance reputation.

Last year, more than 430 injuries occurred in Guernsey workplaces that were so serious they had to be reported to the Health and Safety Executive.

‘This statistic should make us think. Most were completely avoidable and all have resulted in someone suffering as a result. The effects can last a lifetime,’ said Mr Mills. ‘Managing health and safety well in businesses in Guernsey will help to lower this statistic.’

‘It will also make businesses more efficient and more profitable and will add a whole host of other benefits including the preservation of a good reputation, the well-being and retention of employees and allow new ideas to be implemented safely.’

The 1987 health and safety ordinance is the main law in Guernsey, but there are a number of other legal provisions which can be obtained from www.hse.guernsey.gg

The UK has lots of regulations and, while not law here, are often referred to as best practice guidelines for Guernsey companies.

Despite this, some continued to ignore the law, said Mr Mills.

‘We all have a responsibility to ensure that others are not harmed by our actions or inactions. The law defines the duties of businesses and also gives responsibilities to employees too.

‘It’s essential to know your responsibilities and know how to fulfil them to ensure that Guernsey is a safe place in which to work.’

The association is a not-for-profit organisation that was established in 2004.

The Health and Safety Executive can provide free advice and guidance.

There are also a number of professional consultants and trainers based in the island who can help.

Gosha organises talks by experts, arranges site visits to see good workplace practices at first hand, provides workshops on topical issues and offers basic training for businesses.

Good health and safety practice does not have to be expensive, said Mr Mills.

‘Examples of simple things that can be done include placing non-slip matting on floors next to external doors, fixing loose carpet to prevent trips and training employees to lift and move items properly.

‘Giving guidance to employees on working with PCs is important as lots of problems can result from sitting in a poor position, as well checking all equipment to ensure it remains safe and replacing old ladders with a sound working platform.

‘Regular walks around a work environment will help to identify hazards and poor practices before they cause a problem.’
