JUST a week after his excellent performance in the British Isles Champion-ships, Don Batiste lost his grip on the Bowls Guernsey men’s singles title.
The Northerner’s first round Elliott Singles tie was a 25-end thriller against Vale Rec’s Daniel de la Mare at the Corbet Field.
Having been level at 6-6 after nine ends, 16-16 at 20 and 20-20 at 24, Batiste drew shot within four inches of the jack only to see de la Mare draw even closer to take the spoils 21-20.
The Corbet Field green was also the venue for the shortest match of the round when Vale’s Alan Gibson outplayed his club colleague Stan Simon 21-1 in only 13 ends.
Vale’s Matt Le Ber took 18 ends to beat GBC’s Geoff Savident, despite having been 11-0 up at six ends and 20-6 up after 13.
GBC’s Steve Machon was always in front in his game against North’s Dan Le Cheminant, although a rally of seven winning ends by the latter narrowed the gap to only one shot at 18 before a count of three saw Machon through to the next round.
At GBC’s Beau Sejour green Vale’s Gary Pitschou took only 14 ends to beat GBC’s Paul Sargeant 21-2.
North’s Paul Merrien beat GBC’s new prospect Steve Merrien 21-12 after the pair had been tied at 10-all after 13 ends.
Ricky Nash recovered from 16-10 down against his Northern clubmate Sid Le Maitre to earn 11 shots to one over the next five ends and claim the win.
The longest match at this venue was Vale’s Nigel Collins against North’s Paul Wakeham.
The former was 12-0 up at eight ends on a difficult rink before the latter found his weighted shots did the trick with a succession of singles to get within five shots.
But Collins stuck to his drawing task undeterred and finally got the shot required on the 27th end to win 21-15.
