HUNDREDS descended on Saumarez Park last evening for the annual Viaer Marchi.
The National Trust of Guernsey event was packed soon after its official opening time of 5.30 and dozens immediately started queuing for their customary beanjar.
Roddy Dudley-Smith, National Trust of Guernsey president and chairman of the Viaer Marchi committee, has been in charge of organising the event for nine years.
It is the trust’s main fund-raiser and has been going since 1970. He was pleased that the weather had just about held off for the event because it was an occasion to which he believed many islanders looked forward.
‘We don’t like to change anything too much because it’s meant to be a representation of a 1900s market fair. Stalls come and go, but we always try and get the old favourites here.’
