Walk this way, says safety group

LIVING STREETS GUERNSEY is continuing to campaign for a safe walking route to St Sampson’s High – and is urging islanders to road-test a potential new route.

The pedestrian safety group has been in discussions with landowners to try to secure a safe walking and cycling route for children living in St Peter Port.

Teachers, parents and students are invited to try the route – from Pitronnerie Road Industrial Estate via the Island Bowl to the back of the new school site – on Saturday from 2pm.

‘We are extremely grateful to the owner of the vinery site which backs onto the school for giving us permission to walk over his land so that parents and children can see the potential of this possible route,’ said group chairman John Gollop.

Living Streets has been in discussion over the matter with the Education Department since November 2006.

The proposed route, which includes green lanes, is designed to ensure quick, safe passage to the new school.

St Peter Port School Council and the group are inviting deputies and douzaine members to join the walk.

‘We are hoping that we can have a safe route in place for the beginning of term in September,’ said Deputy Gollop.
