Dogs used in Jersey abuse search

0541230.jpgSNIFFER dogs were sent into a German bunker yesterday as the investigation into child abuse in Jersey continued.

The site is near Victoria Tower, about half a mile from the former children’s home at Haut de la Garenne where the search began earlier this year. A forensic team searched a trench around the bunker today and two sniffer dogs were sent inside the tower.

The operation comes after six witnesses reported separate incidents of serious sexual crimes in the underground rooms. It has been declared a potential homicide scene.

Police have said that they will be carrying out a detailed, fingertip search and believe it will be a long-term operation. The search itself, however, is expected to take a few days.  Deputy police chief Lenny Harper (pictured) said that they were looking for evidence to validate the allegations.

Witnesses have claimed that children from the home were taken to the isolated lookout post by carers and abused. This was said to have occurred during the 1970s and 1980s.

The site has been kept under discreet observation for several weeks.

Police are moving out of Haut de La Garenne after they announced that investigations there were coming to an end.

They have details of 109 named suspects, 18 of which are seen as a priority. Some 65 milk teeth and a large number of bone fragments were discovered at the former children’s home, as well as a pair of homemade shackles.
