TWO very different local bike riders are off to Wales this weekend to compete in the Southern Supermoto UK Championship.

Motocross rider Mike Beausire and Simon Cohu, who you are more likely to find careering around Vazon beach on his Jawa 500 slider as a sand racer, are joining forces to race in round six and seven of the series in Dale, Haverfordwest.

The discipline takes in on-road and off-road racing that has some jumps. ‘I’m really looking forward to it,’ said Beausire, 23. ‘It’s bit more of a challenge as you come off the dirt section onto tarmac and your tyres are dirty.’

Beausire, who is also an island basketballer, has competed in the event’s novice class before. He said 80% of the race was on the road while the remaining 20% was off it. ‘I did it twice last year and came 11th,’ he said. ‘I’m hoping to get into the top 10 this year.’

Cohu, 25, came ninth in last month’s Sand Ace Championship.

He competes in the UK regularly on the grass track circuit.

He will race his Honda CRS this weekend.

‘It’s completely different and it should be good fun,’ he said about the championship.

‘I did one last year and that went all right. Hopefully it will be the same this year.’
