ANDY BROWN and Colin Druce, the top winners in the Quayside Marine and Leisure Bailiwick Bass Challenge, were duly honoured at the competition’s presentation meeting held at Les Rocquettes Hotel.
They each received a Maubrook Jewellers Salver, £400 and a rod. They also won the proceeds from the pools, £80 to Brown who won the shore section and £26 to Druce who topped the boat section with his 10-4-2 fish.
Brown is currently on an incredible winning streak in the Bass Open events. In 2006 he won the shore section competition with a 9-6-2 fish while in 2007 he won the Guernsey Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society’s shore section in their open with a 10-3-7 specimen. A win on this occasion with his 8-11-10 fish means he has completed a unique hat-trick.
The evening was compered by Bailiwick Bass Club president Daryl Butcher. He congratulated the winners and had special words of appreciation for the sponsors, who continued to support the annual event.
The two bass clubs have an inter-club competition each year. It is decided on the aggregate weight of the top six anglers’ catches from each club over the two open bass competitions. The president confirmed that at the conclusion of this event the BBC were leading the GBass by 32-15-4 to 31-9-11, a lead of only 1-5-9.
It ensures an exciting finish when the GBass Open is held from 28 August to 1 September.
PAUL CARRE had a successful June for he entered 12 grey mullet weighing a total of 40-0-0 in the Guernsey Mullet Club’s championship competitions.
In all, seven members weighed in a total of 35 mullet. The heaviest, which took the May/June heaviest fish award, was a 5-13-0 specimen landed by Mike Weysom. His total haul for the month was eight for 28-13-8.
Other members who did well were Sam Robins with seven for 22-6-0 and Gary
Le Poidevin with five for 15-14-0.
Anglers with just one fish were Tim Froome 5-5-0, Scott McMillan 4-8-0 and Gary Le Poidevin 3-8-0.
The club championship is based on the members’ top fish each month and this has produced a close race for the top three are separated by only 2-0-8.
Carre has retained his lead with 28-8-0, Robins is second on 27-6-0 and Weysom third on 25-7-8.
WEST Coast Sea Angling Club members caught an amazing 61 lesser-spotted dogfish when they fished an all-night-in-Herm match.
It was fished on the weekend when it blew a gale and poured with rain, so it’s not surprising that only five members braved the elements.
The winner was Lee Gillot who landed 21 dogfish. The club awards a straight three points for this species, so Gillot’s points total was 63. Steve Greenway was second with 16 for 48 points, while Danny Cook was third with 11 for 33 points.
Shane Huxster had the only fish other than dogfish, for he also landed one garfish, which, along with his eight dogfish, gave him 27.5 points.
Steve Huxster completed the catch list with five dogfish for 15 points.
The competition kitty was won by Shane Huxster.
Gillot’s victory meant that he consolidated his lead at the top of the Herm Championship and is now 77 points clear of second placed Shane Huxster.
He has also gone up to second place in the overall championship, just 26.25 points behind leader Mark Hooper who didn’t fish in the Herm match.
