FOR retiring head teacher Trevor Grayland, events come in threes. The Castel Primary School head celebrated his 60th birthday last week, he is retiring on Friday and the birth of his second grandchild is imminent.
‘I’ve been at the school for 12-and-a-half years as head, but it feels like five minutes. I started in 1969 at Vale School and I was there for 18 years. I then became deputy head at Amherst and St Martin’s before coming here. It’s all been good fun.’
Mr Grayland said teaching had not been a lifelong ambition, but after finding himself in Nottingham, it was simply what he decided to do. He came back to Guernsey at his English wife’s request. He has never been particularly ambitious but admitted promotions had been a blessing. ‘I have really enjoyed the extra responsibility.’
One of the highlights of his career was the school getting the highest accolade possible in ICT from UK Government agency Becta as well as the introduction of assessment for learning.
