THE quick men are back. Guernsey tomorrow welcomes back the drivers and back-up teams in the British Hill Climb Championship who will be making their annual pilgrimage to Le Val des Terres.
Some of the greatest drivers in the country will be battling for championship points as rounds 20 and 21 take place at the Guernsey Motor Cycle and Car Club meeting.
Some of the purpose-built machines are faster accelerating and fitted with more technology than Formula One racing cars and they are capable of snaking their way up the hill at more than 100 miles per hour.
Among the field will be Martin Groves, who last July became the first man ever to break 28sec. for the Guernsey hill. The defending British champion has had a disappointing start to his 2008 campaign, but he cannot be ruled out as he is a recognised Channel Islands expert, loving both Bouley Bay and Guernsey’s Val des Terres.
Groves’ 3.5 litre Gould pushes out 650 horsepower, but he may require more than that tomorrow when he is up against young Scott Moran, the current championship leader.
Having gone close in the past, Moran is on form this year having built up a healthy lead in the championship.
Hoping to upset the form book are Moran’s father Roger, Chris Merrick, Rob Turnbull, Paul Ranson and several others.
