COBO are the 2008 Barclays Evening League Division One champions. The west coast outfit claimed the new look competition when they beat Corinthians last night at the KGV.

Technically three teams – Cobo, Corinthians and Rovers – could have been awarded the title going into the match. But Cobo made sure it was theirs when they comprehensively defeated their rivals by more than 100 runs

‘It’s nice to win the inaugural Twenty/20,’ said Cobo captain Stuart Le Prevost. ‘It was great to put 170 on the board. We were happy with that and then the boys bowled really well.’

Cobo’s big total of 176 from 20 overs was based on 40s from Le Prevost, Jeremy Frith and Kris Moherndl.

The plus point in the Corinthians’ attack was the quick bowling of young Will Peatfield.

He hurried on a couple of the Cobo batsmen in his four overs.

Corinthians were always going to have a fight on their hands to get anywhere near that score.

Their promising wicketkeeper-batsman Will Thompson made a good fist of it with 18 before he chipped one up to Jamie Nussbaumer off Pete Le Hegarat.

But the killer blow for the light blues came when Joffy Wilkes-Green ran out their best batsman, Tim Ravenscroft.

Le Prevost mis-fielded the ball at mid-off from a Wilkes-Green drive who proceeded to call Ravenscroft for the run.

However, Le Prevost gathered the ball and threw down the opposite stumps with Ravenscroft well short of the crease.

Despite a rally from Peatfield coming in at seven with 24, the Corinthians never looked like getting close as they were bowled out for just 74.

Claiming the Evening League puts Cobo, who could make up nine of the Guernsey inter-insular side, on course for a clean sweep of all the competitions on offer to them including the big one, the NatWest CI Club Championship.

‘We are going to try and take this form into the CIs,’ said Le Prevost.

‘Things are starting to click. I had said to the boys that we’ve not really been firing on all cylinders, but we’ve now turned it on in the last couple of games.’
